On a highly anticipated Champions League semi-final match-up between Liverpool and Barcelona, it was Lionel Messi who clearly took the lead at creating havoc on the Red’s back line in numerous occasions.
Liverpool started the game by showing spurts of why they are currently at the top of the EPL, standing 2nd place on the table just 1 point behind Manchester City. Nonetheless, Barcelona went on to slowly dismantle the Liverpool defense and began to create some of their own opportunities.
In the 26th minute, Jordi Alba squeezed in a superb lead pass to Barcelona striker Luis Suarez who stretched out his leg just enough to put a touch on it as the ball falls in the back of the net. An excellent start for the Blaugranes, but it didn’t end there.
In the second half, Lionel Messi continued to show persistent attacks of his own. In the 75th minute after a broken play in the Liverpool box, Suarez hits the post and Messi was quick to tap the ball in straight off the rebound. The Argentinean always known to be in the right spot and at the right time. It didn’t take long for him to put in a dagger to their 1st leg match up, scoring a breathtaking free kick that no goalie in the world could stop.
Liverpool will need to weather this storm as their fans await their troops at Anfield next week, in a quest to overcome a devastating 3-0 defeat. On the other hand, Messi and his Barca crew will probably look to score early in order to seal the deal for a Champions League Final return since the 2014-2015 tournament.
